Road to Heaven

Our summer concert celebrates the music of two well-known and well-loved modern British composers.

John Rutter describes Feel the Spirit as paying homage to one of his favourite musical traditions, the spiritual. This cycle of seven songs, one of which provided the inspiration for our concert's title, is arranged for mezzo-soprano soloist and mixed choir. The spirituals range in style from lyrical and reflective to upbeat and jazzy, with syncopated rhythms which set the feet tapping and the spirit dancing.

Star quality will be added to the evening by our soloist, world‑renowned mezzo‑soprano Melanie Marshall. Her vocal artistry inspired Rutter to create the work especially for her, and she was the soloist at its first performance at New York's Carnegie Hall.

Bob Chilcott's Requiem, characterized by its gentle, forgiving atmosphere, was first performed in 2010 to rapturous acclaim. We hope you'll join us to enjoy this perfect music for a summer evening.

...about In At The Deep End, Choral Workshop For Lower Voices

Quote

...thank you to all the members of the Choral Society who helped to organise Saturday's choral workshop, and to make it such a memorable and enjoyable day. The organisation was brilliant from start to finish.

... it was as entertaining as it was instructive.

...the event must have greatly enhanced the society's public profile.

...about Viva Vivaldi, March 2013

Quote Audience feedback:

I enjoyed myself terrifically in the Dixit - I'd never heard it before and I was zapped by Handel's operatic, virtuosic, self-promoting writing.

If you can all sing Handel like that you can sing anything.

It was all very uplifting (as people were saying in the interval) Comments were positive, (folks were quite excited actually !)

It was pure joy to listen to it all. Handel would have been delighted with the performance.

What value Christopher Cromer adds, he commands respect and receives it too. With a leader of such excellence, and all your talents, you can only go from strength to strength.

The choir keeps getting better and better!

I was blown away by the performance of the Choral Society last night. You were all superb. I shall certainly be asking you for a ticket next time. Well done all of you I was very impressed!

Live music at its best.

From choir members:

Great concert again... Very special atmosphere of serious, striving and joyful music making at CCS with wonderful companionship. The highlight of this journey for me has been the sops singing split 1st and 2nd for Dixit - what an effort and growth.

My favourite moment... the opening movement of Dixit... I thought it was spot on. Powerful stuff!

From one of the soloists:

The Choir sounded marvellous.
